To promote the rose as the city flower, designs were solicited from within the city and other places. One of these was chosen and designated as the city symbol mark in November 1993.

The symbol shows male and female, young and old, facing and supporting each other in the cultivation of a rose; the mark itself is also a depiction of a rose.
