Sister Cities of Fukuyama City |
| Fukuyama City actively encourages interchange with other cities
both domestically and internationally. Fukuyama City has one sister city in Japan
and three sister cities overseas. They exchange culture, education, industries
and information of various fields. With the cooperation of Fukuyama Association
for Global Exchange, Fukuyama aims to be an international city, open to cities
all over the world. |

Okazaki City
(Aichi Prefecture)
Affiliated on November 9th, 1971
Okazaki City is located in the center of Aichi Prefecture, the hub city
on the West Mikawa District, Okazaki and Fukuyama have many polnts in common
including the fact that they both started their municipal administration
on the same day and both have done post war reconstruction.

Purpose:
This city became a municipality on the same day as Fukuyama City. The size of
the city and population were similar when the two cities became sister cities.
These two cities were also both reconstructed after World War ¶. These two cities,
with many similarities, will exchange their education, culture, economics and
aim to become modern citizen centered cities.
Outline of the city:
Okazaki city is located in the middle of Aichi Prefecture. This location is also
well known as the origin of Ieyasu Tokunaga and the warriors of Mikawa. Okazaki
city has developed as the center city of Nishi-Mikawa
Exchange work:
Sister schools, Tomo Elementary School (Fukuyama) and Ida Elementary School (Okazaki)
visit each other during the summer. Other organizations have exchange program
as well. |

Hamilton City¡¡(Canada)
Affiliated on October 4th, 1976
Facing Lake Ontarlo and located near Niagara Falls Hamilton is an industrial city
hosting Canada's top-ranking steelworks.

Purpose:
These two cities with many similarities will exchange their education, culture,
industry and improve the conditions of citizen's life and promote social welfare.
By expediting the relationship between Japan and Canada, they hope to contribute
to world peace and welfare for humanity.
Outline of the city:
This city is located in the southwest of Toronto, Ontario, and faces one of the
Great Lakes, Lake Ontario, and is also near Niagara Falls. This city is also known
as an industrial city as Canada's famous iron mill is located there. This city
is the birthplace of the PTA.
Exchange work:
Citizens visit each other and there is also a homestay program for youth, in order
to experience different cultures. |

Pohang City
(South Korea)
Affiliated on January 19th, 1979
Pohang, facing the Japan Sea, holds the greatest steelworks in Korea and has chosen
rose for the city flower.

Purpose:
These two cities inherited Asian traditional cultures. They recognize the importance
and role of each city in the International Society. They exchange culture and
friendship and aspire to contribute to the growing friendship of these two countries
and World Peace.
Outline of the city:
This city faces the Sea of Japan. Their population is approximately, 520,000.
This city has the biggest iron mill in Korea. Similar to Fukuyama City, their
city flower is the Rose.

Tacloban City
(Philippines)
Affiliated on October 19th, 1980
Tacloban is the provinclal capital of Leyte Island, to the Southeast of
Luzon Island,location of the capital Manila. During World war II many of
the 41st, lnfantry Regiment, mainly formed by Fukuyama citizens,died in
battle there.

Outline of the city:
This city is located 580km southeast of Manila and their population is approximately
165,000. Their main industries are copra, fishing, and weaving (matting). During
World War ¶, many of the 41st regiment of infantry regiment, mainly composed of
citizens from Fukuyama, died in battle and are buried in Leyte Island, the island
where Tacloban City is located.
Exchange Work:
Leyte Day ¡ÊAssembly for Peace¡Ëis held every year on October 20th. This memorial
service is primarily participated by the family of deceased war dead. The Leyte
YMCA and Fukuyama YMCA have interchange programs. |
